Photon Emission from Ultrarelativistic Plasmas

چکیده
The emission rate of photons from a hot, weakly coupled ultrarelativistic plasma is analyzed. Leading-log results, reflecting the sensitivity of the emission rate to scattering events with momentum transfers from gT to T , have previously been obtained. But a complete leading-order treatment requires including collinearly enhanced, inelastic processes such as bremsstrahlung. These inelastic processes receive O(1) modifications from multiple scattering during the photon emission process, which limits the coherence length of the emitted radiation (the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect). We perform a diagrammatic analysis to identify, and sum, all leading-order contributions. We find that the leading-order photon emission rate is not sensitive to nonperturbative g2T scale dynamics. We derive an integral equation for the photon emission rate which is very similar to the result of Migdal in his original discussion of the LPM effect. The accurate solution of this integral equation for specific theories of interest will be reported in a companion paper.

Transrelativistic pair plasmas in AGN jets
Models of relativistic jets filled with ultrarelativistic pair plasma have turned out to be very suitable to explain the broadband radiation of γ-ray blazars. Given the initial injection and cooling of ultrarelativistic pair plasma in an AGN jet has occurred, producing the observed high-energy γ-ray radiation, we investigate the further evolution of the pair plasma as it continues to move out f...
متن کاملPhoton emission from a parton gas at chemical nonequilibrium.
We compute the hard photon production rate of a chemically non-equilibrated quark-gluon plasma. We assume that the plasma is already thermally equili-brated, i. e. describable by a temperature, but with a phase-space distribution that deviates from the Fermi/Bose distribution by a time dependent factor (fugacity). The photon spectrum is obtained by integrating the photon rate over the space-tim...
متن کاملUltrarelativistic Electron-Positron Plasma
Ultrarelativistic electron-positron plasmas can be produced in high-intensity laser fields and play a role in various astrophysical situations. Their properties can be calculated using QED at finite temperature. Here we will use perturbative QED at finite temperature for calculating various important properties, such as the equation of state, dispersion relations of collective plasma modes of p...
متن کاملPhoton and Gluon Emission in Relativistic Plasmas
We recently derived, using diagrammatic methods, the leading-order hard photon emission rate in ultra-relativistic plasmas. This requires a correct treatment of multiple scattering effects which limit the coherence length of emitted radiation (the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect). In this paper, we provide a more physical derivation of this result, and extend the treatment to the case of gluon...
متن کاملElectromagnetic Radiation and in - Medium Effects
The theory of thermal photon and dilepton emission from hot and dense hadronic matter, as well as from the Quark-Gluon Plasma, is reviewed in the context of extracting in-medium properties of the matter constituents. In phenomenological applications to ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions we focus on low transverse-momentum ”anomalies” as recently observed in photon and dilepton spectra by WA...
